10 Resort-Style Backyard Renovation Ideas for Your Property
Florida’s long, hot summers are the perfect reason to turn your backyard into a cool, inviting retreat.
Imagine turning your backyard into your own personal resort. Picture yourself soaking up the warm Florida sun, feeling a cool breeze on your face, and stepping outside to see a sparkling pool, comfy lounge chairs, and a patio designed just for you. That’s the magic of renovating with resort-style backyard ideas — it’s like bringing vacation home every day.
Choose a Coastal Theme
Resorts know how to create outdoor spaces that feel fun, exciting, and relaxing — and you can do the same. Choosing a coastal theme is a great way to give your backyard a cohesive, vacation-ready look. Think about what inspires you most: maybe it’s a tropical beach, a lush rainforest, or the breezy Mediterranean coast. Whatever speaks to you, you can bring it to life — the possibilities are endless.

Upgrade Your Pool and Poolside Design
Your pool sets the tone for your whole backyard retreat. Already have one? This might be the perfect time to give it a fresh, stylish upgrade.
- Built-in Hydrotherapy Jets: Enhance your pool with hydrotherapy jets that boost circulation, ease pain, and melt away muscle tension.
- Pool with Baja Shelf: Unlike traditional built-in pool stairs, a Baja shelf — sometimes called a tanning ledge or extended step — gives you a wide, shallow area where you can sit and cool off right in the water. It’s also the perfect spot to set up a couple of lounge chairs so you can relax and get that beach-like feeling of wading in ankle-deep water, without ever leaving home.
- Infinity Edge: Also known as zero-edge pools, these designs let water flow over the edge into a catch basin, creating the illusion of an endless horizon.
- Poolside Comfort: Your outdoor furniture and décor are the perfect way to show off your personal style. Think comfortable chaise lounges, decorative umbrellas, and colorful throw pillows to create a space that feels inviting and uniquely yours.
For example, in this Bonita Bay, FL outdoor living space, we added a curved tanning ledge to enhance both functionality and visual interest in the newly installed pool.
Create a Statement Water Feature
If a pool isn’t practical, a water feature can deliver the same serene, resort-like atmosphere in a compact space.
- Soothing Soundscapes: Waterfalls, water walls, koi ponds, and fountains introduce the tranquil sound of running water. They’re ideal for stress relief and transforming your backyard retreat into a peaceful escape.
- Mask Outside Noise: Furthermore, the gurgling sounds of water movement can help mask traffic noise or the hum of A/C units in urban and suburban areas. This adds to another layer of privacy in your outdoor living space.
- Visual Focal Point: Add natural stone, soft lighting, and lush greenery around your water features to create a soothing, nature-inspired look. When you make them the focal point, they draw the eye and become a beautiful, calming centerpiece for your entire backyard.
In one of our award-winning remodeling projects, we added water features to the homeowners’ pool to enhance the ambience while they enjoy it.

Get a Hot Tub
Create a secluded corner with a custom hot tub. Once you slip in, it’s impossible not to relax as the warm water soothes your tired muscles. For a truly multisensory experience, engage all five senses to elevate your hot tub or water feature area:
- Sight: Position your spa or seating area to face a beautiful view of your backyard, letting you unwind as you take in the scenery.
- Scent: Add hot tub aromatherapy soaks for a calming or invigorating effect, turning your soak into a mini wellness retreat.
- Sound: Hang wind chimes or play soft background music to complement the natural sounds around you and deepen the sense of serenity.
Landscape with Tropical Plants
To make your backyard feel more like a resort, plant lush greenery. Palm trees, flowering shrubs, and ornamental grasses add texture and year-round visual interest. Here are a few ways to incorporate them into your backyard..
- Enhance Privacy: Use privacy hedges, garden walls, or tall plantings to create secluded areas, perfect for an intimate outdoor living experience.
- Blend Plants with Hardscaping: Balance soft greenery with stone pathways, decorative boulders, or a pergola for a polished, custom backyard design.
- Support Outdoor Comfort: Strategic plant placement can provide shade, cool the air, and guide movement through the yard, making your space both beautiful and functional.
- Evening Appeal: Add landscape lighting to highlight trees, shrubs, and pathways, creating a warm nighttime glow for an inviting luxury retreat.
At Progressive Design Build, we also do exterior renovations designed to complement Florida’s climate and give your home that resort-style look and feel.

Install an Outdoor Kitchen and Bar
A high-end outdoor kitchen is the centerpiece of any resort-style backyard. Whether you’re adding a new one or upgrading what you have, here are some ideas to take your hosting game to the next level.
- Design it Under a Roofed or Covered Structure: Place your outdoor kitchen and bar close to the pool or lounge area so it naturally becomes the hub of your backyard. Add an open-air pavilion or covered patio, and you’ve got a shaded retreat where friends and family can gather, grab a bite, and recharge after a swim.
- Outdoor Island and Countertops: Don’t be cooped up in your indoor kitchen while the party’s in full swing. Stone countertops allow you to prepare food outdoors in style, while a custom kitchen island makes it easy to mix drinks and serve food without missing the fun..
- Add Built-in Appliances: Imagine the culinary delights you’ll share with your guests. Smell the aroma of slow-cooked pulled pork smoked over cherry wood in your backyard. Hear the sizzle of cheese as you pull your latest creation from the pizza oven. With built-in appliances in your outdoor kitchen, everything you need is right there—no more trekking in and out of the house..
- Outdoors Bar: Add a fully stocked bar with comfortable bar stools, a beverage fridge, and a wine cabinet to create a welcoming hub for everyone. Whether your crowd includes friends, family, or kids, you’ll have something for everyone — from lemonade to beer.
- Bar Cart Convenience: For smaller spaces or casual get-togethers, a bar cart stocked with tropical drinks, iced tea, and fun garnishes keeps things festive — and pool-safe.
- Ambient Lighting: Incorporate pendant lights or under-counter lights to set the perfect mood for nightly gatherings.
For example, we upgraded the outdoor kitchen and bar of a Bonita Bay home, turning it into a true entertainer’s paradise. The kitchen features sleek, weatherproof Naturekast cabinetry and a stainless steel Alfresco grill with a custom hood, all set against a rustic stacked-stone backsplash for a touch of warmth and character. Just steps away, a peninsula bar with swivel seats invites the homeowners to sit back, sip a drink, and catch the big game in comfort.
Enhance Guest Experience with a Covered Outdoor Dining Area
Make hosting effortless with a covered outdoor dining area. When made as an extension of your outdoor kitchen and bar, your dining area creates a seamless flow within your party. This can also be part of your open-air pavilion or covered patio to protect you and your guests, rain or shine.
- Choose Quality Furniture: Select weather-resistant dining tables and chairs that offer both comfort and durability.
- Add Atmosphere: Use candles, lanterns, or seasonal floral arrangements to set the mood and make every meal feel special.
- Convenience Features: Keep an outdoor serving cart or buffet table nearby to hold drinks, fruit, or dishes, helping the space stay organized and guest-friendly.
In this regional award-winning project, the homeowners were unhappy with their existing patio as it exposed them to the direct sunlight from mid-afternoon to early evening. We solved their unique design-build challenge by upgrading their patio with a stained cypress wood pergola and a custom retractable canopy. We also added a fully functional backyard kitchen for the ultimate indoor-outdoor hosting experience.

Set Up Relaxation Zones
Relaxation zones are your personal escape — the spots where you can slow down, breathe, and just be. Taking time to unwind isn’t just good for your health, it helps you truly appreciate the moment.
- Create Cozy Reading Nooks: With a few soft cushions, a light blanket, and a small side table, you can use the patio, a poolside lounge chair, or a soft patch of grass as a cozy reading nook. Maximize your enjoyment with your outdoor living space by finding spots where you can nap, catch up on your reading, or enjoy the weather.
- Hang a Hammock: Choose a shady spot between two trees or invest in a freestanding hammock. Soften the ground below with grass or bark mulch cover for a safe and inviting landing.
- Design a Meditation Space: Meditation helps us center ourselves and calm anxious thoughts. Lay out a yoga mat or woven rug in a quiet corner. To create a tranquil environment, add candles or diffusers for mindfulness, yoga, or stretching.
- Encourage Daily Use: By making your backyard retreat a true extension of your home, you’ll be more likely to step outside daily and enjoy the serenity you’ve created.
Set Up Socialization Zones
Aside from the poolside chairs, outdoor bar, and covered dining area, you can give your backyard a true resort vibe by creating additional areas where guests can sit back and relax.
- Design a Welcoming Lounge Area: Create a comfortable, well-furnished space with plush seating, weather-resistant cushions, and a shaded pergola. Surround a central coffee table with sofas, woven benches, or daybeds to spark conversation and turn your outdoor space into the ultimate gathering spot.
- Add a Fire Feature: Fire pits and fireplaces instantly transform a resort-style backyard into a cozy retreat. For a modern look, choose a round or square metal fire pit or a sleek glass fire table. For a more natural design, opt for stone or brick to complement the setting with simple, timeless style. Add plenty of seating around the fire feature to encourage connection and keep the conversation going well into the evening.
- Enhance on a Budget: Luxury accents can make all the difference in simple social spaces. High-quality outdoor cushions and cozy throws can turn a patio into an intimate setting. Add impressive details like lanterns, potted plants, or an outdoor rug, and your space instantly feels more luxurious.
At this Fort Myers home, we added a fire pit alongside the kitchen remodel, creating the ideal spot to watch the sunset with friends and family.

Set the Mood with Landscape Lighting
Thoughtful landscape lighting allows you to enjoy your resort-style backyard long after sunset, turning it into a dreamy retreat.

Add More Outdoor Entertainment with Smart Technology
When it gets too cold to swim, set up the mood of the party with more outdoor entertainment. With smart technology, you can do anything. It’s not just possible, but also convenient.
- Create an Outdoor Home Theater: Turn your resort-style backyard into a movie-night destination with a portable projector and retractable screen. Using a weather-resistant audio system, your guests can experience premium sound quality. Add a soft outdoor rug, cozy seating, and snacks for an unforgettable under-the-stars experience.
- Integrate Smart Controls: Set the mood for festivities and quiet nights with Wi-Fi-enabled technology. Through your phone, you can adjust lighting, temperature, and music effortlessly.
- Boost Convenience: Automate timers for landscape lighting, program pool pumps, or even control your outdoor kitchen appliances from your phone.

What Client’s Say
Progressive has performed three projects for us over three years — (1) an outdoor kitchen in January 2011; (2) Kitchen remodel and wet bar construction in Fall 2012; and (3) outer wall repair/reconstruction in January 2014. All the projects were very well done — we respect Progressive’s professionalism, dependency and integrity, and would highly recommend them to anyone, and have done so. We worked with another contractor on a project during the last three years — there was no comparison regarding — the experience with Progressive was MUCH better. My impression is that Progressive may not be the cheapest service provider, work is performed on schedule and at the highest quality level. I will happily pay a bit more to receive the quality of the service they provide. I trust Mike and will definitely use him again if a need arises.
It was such a pleasure working with the team at Progressive Design Build on our recent renovation project in Fort Myers. We especially thank Greg Brown for his special attention to detail and the entire team for their excellent “long distance communication” skills. We were thrilled that we could handle everything from our home in Virginia and that our project was completed not only on time, but ahead of schedule! We would highly recommend Progressive Design Build to everyone!
Thank you for all the wonderful things you did to make our job turnout so well. It was such a pleasure to return to our “new home” during the holidays. We weren’t here so you had to make many choices for us. You always did the best thing, not the easiest. The quality of the work was most important to us but the fact that you gave us a time schedule and stuck to it was important. We love everything!
We hired Mike Spreckelmeier at Progressive Design Build to remodel our condo in Bonita Bay. We wanted to completely redo the kitchen as well as eliminate the sliders from the kitchen and family room leading to the lanai. Progressive completed the remodel while we were back at home in Illinois. We were thrilled to return to an outstanding result. Not only was all the furniture back in place, but everything was very clean and neat. We even found a new filter in the air-conditioning unit! Outstanding job, would highly recommend Mike and Progressive.
Progressive did a room addition, new outdoor grilling kitchen, some plumbing and painting work. Their attention to detail was impeccable. They stayed on task and on their time line. They are very respectful of the client’s property, and very thorough when planning and preparing for the project. They follow up at each stage of the project to ensure all phases are to the client’s satisfaction.
Tom and I can’t wait for the “winter season” when we will enjoy the new addition every day! You have been a wonderful team to work with!
Progressive completed a major remodeling project for us on time and on budget. Our project included new bedrooms above our garage, expanding existing bedrooms, expanding our lanai with a new outdoor kitchen, a new roof, upgraded landscaping including a new irrigation system – all coordinated and managed by Progressive. The owner, Michael Spreckelmeier, is a man of his word, communicates extremely well, and will always do what is best for the customer.
Having moved in, we are delighted with the entire renovation and thrilled by the compliments from many new neighbors on how pleasant, courteous and helpful the various contractors had been at all times. Progressive gets five stars from us. Thanks for a job well done.
Both Tom and I would highly recommend Progressive Design Build, Inc. for any job. The quality of the workmanship along with on time completion made it an enjoyable experience.
We had 2 doors replaced. The project required major changes to the door openings. Michael Spreckelmeier was very easy to work with and he was involved with all phases of the project. The project was completed on time and on budget. We are pleased with the outcome and will use Progressive Design Build in the future.
We have used Progressive Design Build twice in three years, both times on home improvement projects including adding walls on different second homes while we were out of state and unable to observe the work. Both times we returned to the projects that were done to perfection, as well as the clean-up. We are now full time Florida residents and are using Progressive again for a much larger project. We would unequivocally recommend Progressive Design Build.
We were entirely satisfied with everything and everybody. Nice people!
Progressive Design Build helped us design and build a new family room/kitchen in the summer of 2013. We selected them after extensive bids based on the quality of their vision for the project and sterling recommendations from friends and neighbors. All work was done while we were away for the summer. We could not be more pleased with the results. Not only did Progressive owner Mike Spreckelmeier do a first-rate job managing the flow and costs of the project (which was exactly on-budget), but also the finished product had the shortest punch list of any of the five major renovations we have done on various properties with other builders during the past two decades. And, our home was cleaner when we returned than when we left before construction. We unconditionally recommend Progressive Design Build.
Progressive Design Build did a significant project for us: new kitchen, family room, new ceramic tile throughout the house, moved a wall in a bedroom, new paint in most of our rooms and a total new paint job on the exterior of the house. They covered all the details of the job before we left for the summer. They kept us informed weekly with emails, photos and phone calls when necessary, and finished the job two before we came back in the fall. They did an excellent, outstanding job and the punch list took less than six to complete. I will use them again for our next remodel project. Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!

I think during negotiations with Mike Spreckelmeier that he was very honest. This gave me a great sense of trust. I felt I was entrusting my home to a friend!
